Lots of upgrades to the forums this week. The coolest new feature, in my opinion, is probably how threads now show you Similar Threads. Everything also loads even faster now. Plus there is more robust search and personal customization for browsing settings and it is even easier to edit profiles now.
forrestblack probably knows more, but I'm excited about what I've seen so far.

Keep Pot Illegal
For the non-Californians amongst you, Humboldt County is an area in California which is sufficiently north of San Francisco that it might as well be hippie Oregon. And the November ballot here in California is going to have a referendum on whether marijuana should be entirely legalized and not solely legal for those with a prescription. Part of the idea is to tax marijuana to help California’s sagging State coffers.
Kevin Drum at Mother Jones reports that part of the concern is that a black market supports farmer profits and Big Tobacco will just snarf all the market share, should pot be legalized. Sam Quinones at the Los Angeles Times reports that wholesale prices for cultivated cannabis have dropped 25% just since the farmacy legal medical marijuana dispensaries have proliferated. The LA Times says, “Humboldt State economists guess that marijuana accounts for between $500 million and $700 million of the county’s $3.6 billion economy.” Apparently, in harvest season, part time marijuana trimmers seasonal help can make $25 an hour, to supplement their usual work. That is a lot of money in the current economy.
So basically we are going to get what folks got in trade for the last Depression i.e. a bunch of New Deal stuff which only takes care of some people and the government can’t afford and an end to Prohibition so we . . .

Treme Hubig’s New Orleans Pie

by Amelia G : April 12th, 2010

The first episode of Treme did not disappoint. The show is named after a particularly musically important historic neighborhood in New Orleans and the first episode featured appearances by Elvis Costello and New Orleans native Kermit Ruffins, both playing themselves. I’d probably enjoy the show more if New Orleans music resonated with me more, but the general musical lifestyle does resonate, I’ve spent quite a bit of time in New Orleans, I like the food, and I feel like post-Katrina resilience and during-Katrina failures are really important for the USA to examine as a nation. The folks behind this show are not ones to shy away from difficult or important issues. If Treme is anything like The Wire, and I expect it will be, the show will probably demonstrate a full spectrum of viewpoints on problems and solutions. Just one episode in, they’ve already jumped in with both feet on the issues of corruption on government contracts, the economic peculiarities of New Orleans, and . . .
